Camp Winding Gap SUMMER ADVENTURES Staff

Our staff "family" consists of about 10-15 staff members. We believe that staff should be involved in more than one activity area all day, and fully involved with all aspects of camp life. For example, our Waterfront staff teach hiking, arts & crafts, and other activities; our Riding counselors assist with Waterfront, etc. We keep our staff from boredom and burnout by involving them in all areas of camp life. All staff live in camper cabins and assist with or lead the cabin group. All staff are rotated through the support areas such as kitchen, maintenance and laundry, as well as participating in administrative duties. All staff are involved with Evening Programs and all other all-camp activities.

Hard work and low pay. You will get out of a camp experience exactly what you put into it. There are long hours and little monetary compensation. If you fully involve yourself with the program, you will find yourself having a fantastic time and creating memories that will last a lifetime. The summer will fly by. On the other hand, if you really don't want to be staff and are determined to be miserable- that's exactly what will happen.

Camp is also an excellent place for students interested in the teaching field. Nowhere else can you get the 24-hour-a-day hands-on experience teaching and interacting with children. We expect our staff to be role-models for children at all times. We insist on high standards of behavior and personal dress/grooming. We hire only non-smoking counselors. We have many staff policies that you are expected to adhere to at all times. If this job is for you, you won't even notice them- they will become routine. The rewards of a camp staff experience are what you create: we watch our riding counselors work hard for three weeks with a beginning rider and on closing day when the camper rides for their parents, the staff pride is immeasurable!

College Credit.  Many colleges and universities recognize the value of a summer spent in a children's camp. We have had many staff able to earn college credit while working here during the summer.  Almsot every area we have can be applied in some way:  Animal Care to Vet school, Kitchen staff to Culinary school, etc.  We will work with you to obtain the necessary reports and evaluations required during the summer by your school!

Flexible. If you are one that must have everything planned ahead, you will be miserable here. We do not schedule everything concretely before the campers arrive. Part of our program is to allow child development through choices. Campers choose what they want to do every three days. This includes daily activities as well as trips. While we may have put several different trips on our schedule, there may be one that will not go due to lack of camper interest. If you were scheduled for that trip, you will be scheduled for something else. Likewise, we may have a particular program scheduled and scrap it in favor on an all-camp overnight at the last minute. With a larger camp, this would be impossible to do, one of the reasons why we will not be a "large" camp! There have been many instances where the campers wanted to go on a picnic or other activity instead of what was planned- we are flexible enough to allow these changes! We expect our staff to be flexible as well. Our goal is to spend our time with the campers interests, not solving staff problems. To that end we expect all of our staff to join us as team members.

Salary and benefits:  Weekly base salary with incremental increases based on skills and certifications.  Room, board, Worker's Compensation, and laundry done by camp staff and Working Campers.

Support staff and Senior Members of the staff are required to attend one week prior to staff orientation for preparation.  Time-off:  We do our best to insure reasonable time-off for all staff. Generally in an 8-week camp period you will have the equivalent of 12 hours of out-of-camp time off each week excluding the staff training period. This is usually given as 24 hours off each two weeks.  In addition we schedule in-camp time-off throughout the week. This could mean two or three 2-hour periods off in the evenings per week.
